Testing out Sharing Links

I had a request from my graphic designer at http://www.soulcatchfire.com as i have done some work on his site (yet to be published).

The request was to get the content to be linked to facebook, youtube, stumble, digg, and twitter etc.  And to provide a description of each and to be able to embed links these into certain content areas.

So my serach begins.

I started with facebook, as I myself love that function when reading an article i like and can just send it to facebook for my friends to see too. (something else i miss about my lack of facebook access at the moment.)

Most search paths led me to how to do this with Blogs, i.e. instering code into Blogger and WordPress.com templates.  Now i was seeing it was as simple as a URL and an Img, so i dont understand all the confusing bits other than that.

Web Host Start

Well….what i want is to have my website, and its many extensions and works in progress, the wiki i want to work on, possibly a forum and the ability to be able to use PHP, MySQL, Perl and god knows what else.

Know i know i can set up my computer as a Web Server with Apache and some other bits (not that i know any of it really is) and this will allow me to produce and work on such projects. But then being able to access things from the web anywhere is trickier.

Usually a Static IP is required, but with most Internet Providers a dynamic one is used. Since the IP is constantly changing, linking to files on the computer isn’t possible unless you know the current IP at the time. One solution is to get a static ip, but this usually costs more. So after a few enquiries, i was directed to www.no-ip.com. This sets up a pile of ‘things’ and basically when its all set up correctly, monitors your IP to keep track of the changes and uses a DNS (domain name server) to redirect.

This seems to be the best option, but a little help will be needed as i don’t understand a lot of the terms. (I often realise that unlike a true computer geek, i know bugger all when it comes down to it).

The first thing is to set my computer up as a web server…

Requirements:
Apache Web Server
PHP 5.1.x
MySQL Database Server

Wiki Search on Lunch Break

Posted: February 1, 2007 in research, web, Wiki

Afternoon, it is once again my lunch break, and with lack of people to talk to and the urge to put my feet up, here i am.

Today i decided to have look up Wiki’s, like wikipedia.com. My journey for somewhere to put all my thoughts doesn’t end here at Blogger.com. I want a lot of structure for the articles i write for when i move on to more factual stuff. At a previous job, they used their own version of a wiki, and i really liked the way it worked and saw a lot of potential.

So lets see what google results shows me:

Ok lunch was busy so ive had time to read a little from here, and i definitely want to go ahead with it.
This link is to a chapter of the wiki book which explains the basics, setup and layout.

Before i can start a wiki, i need to reformat my compter and most likely my laptop while im at it. I need to make it into a server (i need this for other reasons to, so might as well instead of hunting for some other server to set it up on).

The reading is fascinating, i cant be much more specific about it at this time.

Media Wiki was suggested by Rasteri.
I looked this up and it was exactly what i was looking for and not as complex as what i was looking at before. So im majorly chuffed now. Just have to wait for my net to be connected so i can play about with it : ))
