New to WordPress

•March 7, 2008 • 2 Comments

Well after hearing WordPress mentioned quite a lot, but staying away from it until i am ready to start working with content management systems, i was listening to TWiT (or was it MacBreak Weekly) and found out that you could have a WordPress Blog online, without having to work behind the scenes.

Phew thats tha long sentance over with. So here i am, I had a quick look through what features this offered, as i currenlty have a Blog with Google’s Blogger (which im yet to really use often), and it didnt take much to convince me to leave. Especially when it said you could import Blogs from services such as Blogger, and also export the blog if you wish to  leave.

So here’s to my adventures with WordPress, and hope it really brings out the Blogger in me : )

Ok Getting Organised….

•February 1, 2008 • 2 Comments

Well since i arrived at work today, and been handed stuff that will probably take like 2 hours, and the network is down….im getting paid to sit h ere and do nothing.

Now since im reading more blogs and such….and feeling bad that i still havent got my site off the ground..i feel its the perfect time to load up a pile of sites and get the info up to date:

Bebo
Facebook
Myspace
Twitter
Picasa

Flickr
Blogger

(feeling dumb that i cant work out what my flickr and facebook url is)
Update: thanks for that Alex, i had seen that, it just looked like a daft url.

And maybe get round to looking at my google notebook for a list of music, films etc so i can actually fill in my interests better.

So here i go, with the lovely accompnient (ermm…wheres the spell check ? does i.e 7 not have it ?) of my fantastic new ipod nano..and currently some rocking Thin Lizzy.

Oh, btw, do you think i should have two blogs (till i get a proper system), one for personal rambles, and one for tech /geek things ?

-Update: ok the network at work is back online…that was 11.30, its now 12, time for lunch..and then actually work : )

Xmas In Dundee

•December 28, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Well that’s me on the bus returning home from Dundee. Its been a great trip, full of real Xmas spirit and positivity.
Xmas is all about other people as well enjoying yourself, and I definitely accomplished this on the visit. To keep a good friend company and liven up his Xmas, and getting to chill and do things we both enjoy.

We went on lovely walks around Dundee. One windy afternoon we took a stroll down to the Tay, taking in the lovely views along with the blustering wind in our hair. Another day we were unsure were to head, and ended up taking a stroll and discovered a skate park. It was great to do all of this with camera in hand, and in Ross’s case, a video camera. We took some good shots of the skate park, and once home went about working out how to get these into Google Earth.

The days started with fresh coffee and weetabix, with the one adventurous morning of a fry up. The afternoons were time to go for a stroll, and luckily the weather was kind to us. The evenings saw us whipping up some tasty meals, with the lovely raw ingredients of onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, sundried tomatoes, olives and…erm cheese, and then either pasta or, erm eggs to pan it out. The main ingredient that pads out the veg is insignificant when you have an array of tasty ingredients that can stand on their own. Eating these at the table to make a change from lounging on the couch was a nice twist. Once our bellies were stuffed, and it was difficult to move, it was time to open up the laptops.

We did various kinds of work; Ross working more on his animation, me working on my movie for my best friends’ Xmas present. We also worked through the Neuro Linguistic Programming book I had bought for Ross, and also own myself, in order to see how to work out and lay down our goals.

I must say Ross out shone me in this department! He got right into his Google calander and notebook in order to start moving ahead in his goals. I just got more and more frustrated to be honest, but I spend the majority of my time trying to find the right bit of software to write mine in. The idea of writing in a text pad with a white background was horrifying. So I started with Google’s presentation software, moved to trying to use Keynote, then even ventured into making a Net Beans php project. I wanted to install Open Office, but there was a glitch so that will have to wait. I gave in and installed MS Office. By this time hours had gone by, and I only just completed the well-formed goal structure for my first goal, and wasn’t in the best of moods.

It was great watching Ross work on some of his project in After Effects, and start playing around with camera angles, and also see the project come to life a bit more. I feel that this project is a journey for me to be part of even if I’m just watching it. Its great to see something develop from sketches, and watch all the different techniques and design stages. I wonder what texture the couch will end up with.

We stayed away from TV as much as we could. We did watch a couple of polar bear documentaries, and Creature Comforts. I wasn’t able to persuade the watching of Top Gear. Then there was the great movie of the week….Polar Express…I must say it was tragic. We spent the time ripping it to shreds, and were dying for it to be over. One movie I will not be watching again.

I can’t think of anything that would have made it a better week, maybe more ice cream lol

While waiting for the bus, I saw a young lad, dressed, as I would put it, like a ned. He was asking people if he could buy a cigarette. After he had a few failed attempts, I waved him over to where I was sitting on my luggage, and offered to make him a rollie from my tobacco. He sat down net to me, and we ended up having a conversation. I always like the times when I talk to random people, so much can be gotten from it. It turned out he lived in the streets and had been in foster care most of his life. We just breezed over these topics, which was nice. Its hard to know what to say to someone who lives on the street when you know you’re carrying a good quality laptop, phone and pda as well as a stack of xmas presents, and that you are heading back to your nice warm house with all its amenities.

I happened to have a spare packet of tobacco and papers on me which I gave to him. Not out of pity, just because I knew I wouldn’t miss it, and it would be something good for him that he would appreciate. He was a nice guy, very polite and friendly, called Dean. As I said to him, there are many good people I know who don’t have much in the world, and far too many people who are not so good and have lots.

After times like this I struggle with the fact that so many people have it so bad, and this is something I try not to think about, I like to bury my head in the sand and get on with my life. We cant all make it our mission to save the world. I have my plans for how I want the world to be a better place, and how to get people to realise their potential and do the same. This area is in software and working practices, as well as life coaching further down the line. My talents would be wasted if I went and worked for a homeless association to get people off the streets. That’s not my passion, but hopefully I can help people fulfil their passions and do the things I cannot.

This may all come off as a bit pompous, or…there’s probably a list of negative words for it. I have days where I feel like the whole human race should be wiped out, and the planet left to get on with in. I have to not watch news and upsetting real life stories too much. Even down to not really knowing what is going on with our own government. It steals away my hope and positivity. When I am stronger and on a better path, I can incorporate these things more and not be so naïve.

I know that my mother went out her way to save the world at a young age. She was a great activist. But she left me knowing that we all have our own path, and there’s nothing wrong if I don’t have a drive to go on big marches, and lie in front of trucks or chain myself to a tree. As long as I am true to myself, and don’t harm others and have respect for things, that’s a good start.

Still on the bus, and I must say I’m feeling a bit queasy, but its not often I sit typing on the laptop while travelling. I’m looking forward to getting back in my front door and having my troop of cats greet me. I know my house will be a tip and in urgent need of cleaning. Well I think I can tackle that after a nice freshly brewed cup of chai tea, and stick on some the of lovely world music Ross has given me. I will probably salsa round the flat, tripping over the cats, making it look like it should.

I just had to look out the window and took a good long breath while looking at the way the sun is lighting up the mountains and the clouds show some beautiful shades of colour, and praying that the big dark purple ones are not going to follow me and let go of their load when I hit Aberdeen.

Once some cleaning is completed, I’ll be ready to await the arrival of Mandy for our great night our (attempt 2). I’m disappointed that I couldn’t get the movie project written to disc, but then the complications of rendering it to an avi, running it out of hard drive space and then having to re-do and seeing the quality at a shocking bad level, were just not things I foresaw. At least I can show her the project in all its glory inside iMovie, and sort out the rendering and writing to disc at a later stage.

We will hit the town, and go to clubs I haven’t been to in ages, in fact I don’t think I’ve been to any apart from Moshulu since Mandy left about 3 months ago. Its not something I do on my own, instead I go and free myself dancing in the street on a Saturday. Will be a great night, and alcohol for me is strictly limited so that I make it through the night this time.

I’ve even had time to read over this and perform a spell check, and now im just pulling into Aberdeen.

Time to sign off and enjoy the view.

Tonight’s Plans – Cabal

•December 14, 2007 • 1 Comment

Tonight i have booked a special evening with my Graphic Designer, the lovely Ross Sharp. We will be sitting town together via the power of Skype, and will have a great night of…..well, i dont quite know how to put it. A night of creativeness. Thats it, a time for creative collaboration.

I haven’t worked on my website in a few weeks since setting up mysql on mac os 10.4 was a traumatic and unsuccessful experience. And Ross hasn’t had a change to have much feeback on his progressions.

With my google notebook in hand, i will be doing my best to keep up with my production diary as i go along so you can see what my efforts produce.

Ross has named this night a Cabal night (i also had to go look this up in wikipedia).

Daily Update

•December 14, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Well yesterday I was so dying for my bed. I was yawning from the moment, all the way through work. On Tuesday I had had a late night hosting the knitting group’s xmas party, and this was followed by a late night Wednesday watching my new Harry Potter DVD with friends, and finishing of some more of the alcohol left over from the party. (Those Babysham were very tasty). And all week I’ve gotten out of bed about an hour and half after my alarm and just rushed out the door. This means lack of shower, coffee and breakfast and makes the whole day go by slower.

So on Thursday, my plan started off being that I would get home and go straight to bed. But then I felt I had to watch Neighbours first. Then I decided I do love watching the Dog Whisperer after. As the day went on, in order to stay in the real world and not fall asleep, I migrated from Bebo and Facebook, onto listening to some TWIT. This then led to looking up various things, and to watching some tech vids and the like. I was then worried I would get in and spend the whole night endlessly looking things up and getting engrossed in new gadget videos (my favourite for the day had been Google’s Android (their Software Development kit mobile platforms))

When I got home, I did start watching tv, accomplishing the grand total of Neighbours, The Dog Whisperer, Dawsons Creek, and then House. I then fell into bed, determined not to turn the mac on or id never succeed in a night of sleep.

And this had a relatively good ipact on today’s events. I still got up a bit late, but I had time to jump in the shower, and sit and have some scrumptious weetabix and coffee (with syrup instead of sugar). Another slow morning of Bebo and Facebook (not that I manage to respond to anything), I then looked at Will Harris’s pages I had open yesterday (thanks Google Sync). Having a quick look and Twitter and Pounce that the TWIT team mention all the time, but I wasn’t so impressed. I think its just because I don’t see a use for them yet while I’m still bogged down with other things and not having even got round to reading my Google Reader for months. I looked into Channel Flip that Will had been talking about and was very impressed. This will now be added to the top of my most visited sites. Which reminded me at the time that I really need to sort out the list of most visited sites, as I’ve got some ive forgotten, including Blogger.

On this trail, I also signed up to Flickr since its all the age right now. I wasn’t so impressed. I’ve seen a couple in the past, but I’m just over the moon with Google’s Picasa. It helps that my iPhoto on the mac has a Picasa plugin which allows me to add photo’s with one click…and I don’t just mean one, I can select a whole album, tell it where to go, and off they go. It mean’s I want to run and hide when I have a lot of photos, and a system that wants me to browse for every single on of them.

After just mentioning that, I felt I should see how flickrs upload system works. It didn’t hit me right away that you could select more than one photo while in the browsing window. But I’m actually quite impressed. I might actually be more inclined to use this. And there appears to be a handy link for desktop tools…tum tee tum…/*looks round the flickr pages*/ ok they seem to also have an iPhoto plugin, way to go! Ok im actually getting more impressed with the system.

And really I haven’t done much else today. But I’m glad I did actually stop and start blogging.

Oh I also forgot, i changed my Gmail from Pop to IMap on the mac. Need to sort out all the folders in it now, but its nice to have. /*requires explaining*/

(i remebered this as my collegue wanted to send a picture of the flowers she recieved to her freind..so the process went….1. Take photo on my phone 2. get photo onto mac via bluetooth 3. chuck it in an email 4. she forwards the email to the sender of the flowers.

Back to Blogging

Ok its jsut a tease reading other people’s blogs and not doing my own! I always consider doing it, and i have all the tools at my finger tips, i just havent quite got round to it.

Mainly I’m scared of how unstructered it will be, how what i say will come out…..basically a lot of things. But as i try to keep telling myself, i always have to start somewhere. So i will be trying to actually post a blog in the mornings after a night of lying ther thinkign ‘oh i could write this down’.

Here’s to my new life of blogging, starting slowly and randomly and messily :P

Syncing Phone and Mac

•December 14, 2007 • Leave a Comment

Sine i talked about my Sony on Virgin phone, I thought i might as well tell you the other features i use.

In this day and age, when you’re a techie, you need to be synced – that is, you want all you data everywhere. Mainly contacts, email and phone numbers. After I had used a plugin for Adium (my instant messenger on the mac) which allowed me to share contact information with the mac’s address book, i then synced my phone with this. Its such a great feature, and save’s me so much time. It means i have everyones details where ever i go. I then downloaded my contacts from my gmail account, and uploaded the new list.

This can be done with most software, phones, and operating systems, but the mac makes it so simple. I feel sorry for the people that have to use sony’s software on the pc/windows as its such a horrible interface.

iCal (Mac’s calander) is also syncable. Infact the macs iSync does the address book and contacts in one, even tho they are seperate applications. I also linked my google calander into the iCal, and then this goes onto my phone. Sadly the google calander which i love dearly doesnt actually sync, i.e. events i put into my iCal are not uploaded, it only downloads uneditable events from google.

Syncing can also be done with an iPod.

Sadly the past 4 days, i cant seem to get the phone to sync : ( it connects (bluetooth) and i can access its files and put files on there (e.g. a chosen mp3 as a ringtone), but it just wont sync.

Sony Erricson

•December 14, 2007 • Leave a Comment

In regards to the post earlier in the year about the Sony Erricson K800i. I never actually got the phone, thanks to equifax deciding they’ve forgotten who i am and therefore not letting me pass a credit check. So i had to give up with the pipe dream, and wait for another day. (well really all i had to do was fax equifax some bills and details, but this felt like too much hassle).

That was April, and in October i had still managed with a cracked screen. Then at one great party, i woke up to find the screen even more cracked. Again i coped for a couple of weeks, and then to Virgin. I still hadn’t sorted out equifax, and once again couldn’t get on to a contract, so i gave in and payed the £70 for a pay as you go.

I’ve been very chuffed with it since, it indeed has a lovely interface to use. But i feel let down with the camera. I dont believe its as good as it was hyped up to be, or as good as i remeber on my ex-s phone. The flash is pretty poor, and this lets it down the most. But i would say its very good for its price, and I’m quite happy with it. If i wasnt outstanding quality pics, thats what a digi cam for. This still takes sweet pictures in the moment. The best pictures are without a flash, and when nothing moves.

All the photos of the Xmas Knitting party were taken with this phone. They had to be brightened up a little, and leave a bit to be desired.

Yet i found pics like the following turned out really well:
http://picasaweb.google.com/zenrhe/CalderGlen26112007

Update : 01 Feb 08

Ok its all down to the fact it has a crappy flash..even tho it was said to be one of the best (in its range). God i want a new digi cam to replace the phone…but i just got an ipod…time to save.

Job Offer

•June 6, 2007 • Leave a Comment

I had a Job offer today from Aberdeen Appointments Agency who i used to work for since i was 16.
They are aware i have a job, but something came up that they said seemed to match me perfectly.

A DataBase Controller
Robert Gordon College
£10 per hour

Now after tax calculations, thats an extra £250 a month in my hand. It is also a far easier commute into town than it is to Inverurie where i am based at the moment.

I was very grateful of the call, and said they can call if they have more if they want, you never know when i might get sick of Arnlea.
But I’m so happy here…even if its tough and stresses me out, the point is i really want to further my career and learn as much as i can, and here i have all the opportunities to do that, and once I’m finished, my skills will be so so valuable to me, and i will be able to go into anything.

I was asked “would u rather not be doing something to do with IT like database maintenance than just doing invoices all day?”

Now i do spend a lot of time on invoices and delivery notes and such, but thats because our system doesn’t work, and in the next couple of weeks we will have Sage fully set up, so it will no longer be a manual system! woohoo

We need to get our databases sorted…here i’m working on improving the company and will work with lots of different IT areas. I will be setting up a software support system, most likely RT, as well a a proper project management system, and proper stock and time sheet management. Thats why I’m called the Office Manager.

I’m happy, settled and have so many prospects here, that is worth more to my life than more money.

I just need to learn Time Management! and i wont end up going so mad, and also hire someone to be my personal assistant :)
